cells (HIV entry inhibition)
Overview

A 36-amino-acid synthetic peptide and the first HIV fusion inhibitor, FDA-approved in March 2003. It blocks HIV from entering host cells by binding to the gp41 protein's HR1 region, preventing viral-cell membrane fusion. Reserved for salvage therapy in treatment-experienced patients whose virus has stopped responding to other drugs. Commercially discontinued in February 2025 due to availability of superior alternatives.
