A lantibiotic (lanthionine-containing antibiotic) with five thioether bridges that binds to lipid II, preventing bacterial cell wall formation and forming pores in the membrane, leading to bacterial cell death. FDA approved as a food preservative and generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
