Overview

A 24-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded in the mitochondrial genome (16S rRNA gene). Discovered in 2001 as a survival factor for neurons exposed to Alzheimer's disease-related insults, humanin has since been found to have broad cytoprotective, anti-apoptotic, and metabolic regulatory properties. Along with MOTS-c, it represents a growing class of mitochondrial peptides that function as retrograde signaling molecules.
