Overview

Sermorelin is a 29-amino-acid fragment of human growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and the shortest piece of GHRH that retains full activity. It binds the GHRH receptor on the anterior pituitary, stimulating the synthesis and pulsatile release of endogenous growth hormone. Because the pituitary remains under somatostatin negative-feedback control, the GH rise is self-limiting, making overdose harder than with recombinant GH. It was FDA-approved in 1990 as a diagnostic for GH deficiency and in 1997 for treating idiopathic GH deficiency in children, but was discontinued commercially in 2008 for business reasons. Off-label and compounded use continues.
